One of the most important factors determining the lifetime of an asphalt pavement is the ageing of bituminous binders. The oxidation of binders in roadway has a negative impact on the pavement durability. This process of ageing involves changes of mechanical and chemical properties that generally make bituminous materials harder and also more brittle. In general, ageing can be divided into two parts. The first, rapid short-term ageing occurs during production, storage and application when the binder is subjected to heat and air. The next, slow long-term ageing occurs during lifetime after application in the binder service life. In this study the standard methods for short-time and long-term ageing were applied with modified condition (time of ageing) to understand how the ageing of bituminous binders takes place. The next goal of the presented work was ageing of a bitumen mixture with three types of mastic by RCAT method and comparison the properties of thus short-term aged binder. This laboratory process of ageing should be closer to the real conditions in the asphalt plant.
