Review
A brief survey of promising glycerol utilization in large or medium volume chemical production is given in the Chapter. In particular, the prosesses based on dehydration or C-O bond cleavage by hydrogenation are discussed in more details. Glycerol can be dehydrated to acrolein on acidic catalysts, first of all on solidified phosphoric acid. Development of the process of production of acrolein and acrylic acid is described using literature data. Mechanism, catalysis and some industrial aspect of the production of propyleneglycol by catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol is studied using literatura as well as the author´s original results. The main attention is paid to Cu-based catalysts.
