Hydrogenation of alkenes or their mixtures is a process widely utilized in the industry. Nevertheless, there is a lack of data concerning kinetics of the process in modern literature. Though the gas-liquid-solid hydrogenation is most frequently utilized in industrial processes, the gas phase hydrogenation can be an interesting alternative for lower alkenes, up to C5, bringing some advantages over the liquid phase process. The gas-liquid-solid system is more complex in terms of kinetics and mass transfer as gas-solid, liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid mass transfer mechanisms can take place. On the other hand, in the gas phase reaction, large excess of hydrogen is necessary to maintain hydrocarbons in gas phase on one hand and to prevent the system from inacceptable preheating on the other hand as the alkene hydrogenation is a strongly exothermic reaction characterized with high value of adiabatic temperature increase. Measuring and evaluating of the kinetic data is therefore not a facile problem. This is true mainly for C5 alkenes. It is the main goal of this study to provide kinetic data of C5 alkene mixture hydrogenation, obtained with real, industrially utilizable, catalyst particles, which can be used for the process design.
